…you sure about that? 🧐

Hey Reader,

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that when you hear me talk about RAR's Summer Adventure and hear me say things like:

...you feel like something like this:

Maybe it sounds like:

“I barely understand Shakespeare myself. How am I supposed to TEACH it?”

Or even:

“No summer school for us, thanks. My kids will hate it.”

Can I just say?

In fact, after last year's Shakespeare Summer program, we got lots of emails from shocked moms who didn’t believe me, either. 😆

But then afterward, they wrote in and said things like this:

Here's what I can promise: this is a completely different way of doing Shakespeare.

You’re not sitting down with a 400-year-old play, trying to decode every line while your kids stare at you blankly.

You’re pressing play. You’re laughing. You’re following the story. You're admiring my award-winning art.

Ahem.

Okay, you’re admiring my very-mediocre-stick-figure-drawings, but they’re probably making your kids laugh.

And as for the “this might feel like school” concern?

Nope.

Instead:

  • One of your kids is dramatically overacting their lines (or using one of the other acting tips I include in each week's video)
  • Someone else is giggling while acting out the play with puppets
  • And you? You're a little surprised by how much fun you’re having.

That’s the goal. I mean, it’s basically my #1 goal this summer. 😆

Of course, this might not be your season for Shakespeare. Maybe you have kids all under 10. Or you just had a baby.

Or the idea of a Shakespeare Summer makes you want to hide in a hole.

If picture books are more your speed right now, we've got you covered, too. (We’re Read-Aloud Revival, OF COURSE WE DO!)

Because if there's something we're sure of, it's that reading Jan Brett's picture books this summer to journey around the world will be an adventure worth taking.

Either way (Shakespeare or Jan Brett), you win.

You get a summer that is connected, satisfying, and joyful. And your kids get bookish, delightful summer memories to keep with them forever.

I can't wait.

xo,
Sarah

Hey Reader, Here at the Read-Aloud Revival, we’ve been asked more times than I can count to create virtue-based book lists. And I always say no. But it's not because I don't believe books can build virtue in our kids. So today on the show, I invited Audrey, our Creative Director, back with me to talk about why we don’t make lists of books that specifically set out to teach kids about kindness, honesty, or other virtues. The reality is, all good books have a powerful capacity to inspire us...

Hi Reader, When you think about the various work that goes into making a children’s book, research probably isn’t at the top of your list. It might not make it on your list at all! But research is often an essential part of the process. And I can tell you from personal experience that research can be a time-intensive, sometimes overwhelming, but often the most delightful task. Today on the show, we’re hearing from some incredible authors and illustrators about the research that goes into...
